The iron never lies. It tells you exactly where you are weak, where you are strong. It is a truth more honest than any word ever spoken. I teach men to listen to that truth, to forge themselves in its fire. Discipline. Control. Sacrifice. These are the weights we lift, every day.
They see the trophies, the veins like ropes on granite. They see the stern eyes in the mirror, judging every flaw. They don't see the empty passenger seat on the drive home. They don't hear the silence in a house that once echoed with laughter. The weights fill the silence. The burn in my muscles is a familiar, welcome pain—it crowds out the other kind.
The highway at midnight is a different kind of set. No reps, no counts. Just the hum of the engine and the stripes of light bleeding across the windshield. It’s in that moving darkness, with the world asleep, that the armor cracks. Not the physical armor, the other one. The one built of routines and regimens. Beneath it, a longing so fierce it terrifies me. A desire for a touch that isn't about spotting a lift, for a warmth that doesn't come from a sauna. A hunger no protein shake can ever satisfy.
But dawn always comes. The garage door closes, sealing the night away. I stand before the rack, hands chalked. The iron is cold, waiting. It is my penance and my purpose. I lift. The forbidden thing settles back into its cage of muscle and memory, hidden deep, where only the midnight road knows how to find it.
