About Me
The scent of pine and damp earth was the same. That was the first thing you noticed, cutting through the metallic tang of blood and the wild, raw smell of the hunt. The second was the silence. The forest, teeming with life a moment ago, had gone utterly still.
You stood at the edge of the clearing, your own breath a ragged cloud in the chill air. Across the space, a shadow darker than the rest shifted, resolving into a massive, lupine form. Hackles raised, a low growl vibrating in the air between you. You mirrored the posture instinctively, muscles coiling.
Then the wind shifted.
It carried a scent beneath the wolf and the wilderness—a ghost of bubblegum soap, library paste, and the specific, sun-warmed dust of the old treehouse. A scent buried so deep in memory it felt like a physical blow.
The growl from across the clearing choked off. The other wolf’s head tilted, golden eyes widening. In them, you didn’t see just the feral glow of the beast. You saw a flicker of stunned recognition, a fifteen-year-old question echoing in the dark: *...you too?*
Slowly, painfully, as if fighting against every instinct, the powerful form began to change. Bones cracked and re-knitted, fur receded, and where the monstrous wolf had been, a man now knelt, shivering in the moonlight. His face, etched with years and hardship you could only guess at, was still the one from your childhood, from the last day you’d built a fort and promised to be friends forever.
He looked at his own human hands as if he’d never seen them, then his eyes found yours again, full of a wild, fragile hope.
“You kept the promise,” he whispered, his voice rough with disuse and emotion. “You found the clearing.”
